The Indian Civil Services conducts a competitive examination for various positions in the Government of India that includes Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), etc. It is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) at the national level with lakhs of students competing among themselves with a success rate of 0.3% of the total aspirants. The number of vacancies may vary each year depending upon the requirements in the aforesaid departments.

The civil services examination is generally held in 3 stages namely, Preliminary examination stage consisting of two objective-type papers, General Studies and Aptitude test, focusing on analytical abilities and understanding. Main examination stage- Once qualified in preliminary exam of civil services, this stage consists of nine papers, two qualifying and seven ranking in nature. Personality Test stage – This is the final stage in civil services exam where the interview is held for those who clear the Main examination. The objective is to evaluate the mental caliber of candidate for the suitability in civil services.

The whole civil services examination process takes approximately a year and final results are generally announced before the next preliminary examination. Post selections, the candidates are made to undergo the training program usually in the month of August every year to fit them in the desired department of civil services.
